Office 365 Education - 1TB OneDrives Backup location?

Recommended Posts

Morning guys,

Anyone know of any reasons you couldn't use the multiple free 1TB OneDrives as an offsite backup location? I remember reading on here a little while ago about someone using a program to Map them as a drive and wondered if you could go one further.

Obviously will need some kind of securing in terms of passwords etc, but as all the email data etc is held in "safe" zones.

Thanks,

Steve

Not sure around implications of using the service outside of its intended purpose but you'll probably hit issues with file naming if you're taking shared drive data and placing it straight onto OneDrive. Length of paths, special characters and so on cause it problems and won't sync correctly. I also find the desktop client sync quite unreliable and has a habit of not completing syncs properly. Wouldn't trust it for backup tbh unless you;re uploading the compressed backup files to it (bear in mind 10GB limit per file)

Aye was considering doing the backup files in whatever form just as that disaster recovery level, not constantly being updated etc.

Ah ok, never used the desktop client but guess if it's not syncing very well that isn't a good start haha :)

Thanks,

Steve

I've been looking at this recently - I wouldn't do the onedrive but if you look at the NAS's such as Lenovo Iomega which can upload directly to AWS its dirty cheap.

1TB in the cloud on S3 is $30 a month..... TBH i would rather do that and know it is a simple setup then mess around with onedrive and all its fun.

We had a Riverbed SteelStore on trial recently, does a similar thing writing straight to Amazon, Azure etc. Nice and easy, the online storage was pretyt cheap as well, just make sure to check the T&C's on the online storage package you choose so you're aware of data charges for storage and retrieval (some really catch you out on the latter)

Thanks guys, will have to have a look at those, the NAS idea too didn't know some of them link directly in now :o Get Veeam to make a copy to NAS, and NAS syncs automatically with cloud? Simples! :D (In theory lol)

That is one negative of Amazon S3 - but if you are in the disaster stage retrieving a files 99 times out of 100 the insurance will pay for it.

I have just looked at that SteelStore which looks pretty good.

Has anyone worked out if Synology NAS will be able to sync to 0365 onedrive? They talk of this feature in DSM5.1 beta but the don't say if it is just personnel one drive?
