GRitchie Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 (edited) I have a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, I installed the Yosemite beta and it was fine, then after one of the beta updates all of a sudden it became really slow. I hoped after the final installation came out it would make it better, but unfortunately it hasn't. It takes forever just to move the mouse, let alone open applications. Plus, the startup is incredibly slow and the fans sound like they're constantly running at full! Finally, I can't boot into recovery or safe mode or anything as it just won't let me. Any ideas? :-/ I'd format, but like I say about the recovery mode, plus, how would I backup my data when I can hardly open applications etc.[/font] Edited October 18, 2014 by GRitchie
TomCollins Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 Could you try making an external USB drive with the Yosemite installer and try to install it that way? Installing the OS on top of an existing installation just rewrites the system files, and leaves your data safe. Let us know how it goes, Tom

How would I go about downloading the Yosemite installer? I have taken out the hard drive, copied the data off (using an HFS explorer) so that's safe. Whilst I was at it, I put in a Windows HD and the fans still span up to full instantly might I add!

Try a PRAM Reset: OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM - see how that goes, should sort out the fan issues. There is a terminal command to create a bootable USB from downloading the Install OS X Yosemite.app from the Mac App Store (Creating a bootable OS X installer in OS X Mavericks). Although these instructions are for Mavericks, should apply to Yosemite as well. Tom

The only issue with having to create the USB is that I have to do it on the mac - which is the problem in the first place!
