We are currently at the planning stage of a new music block and i'm in 2 minds as to pushing for it to have 10g fibre link, it's going to be a huge increase in cost and will have to fund a new module in our core but i think for long term it's worth while. While im thinking of that it's probably best to go Cat6 cabling instead of cat5e now isn't it?

 

If i have 10g in the new build will it autosense only a 1g on the other end? Not sure i can swing and entire backbone upgrade out of it!

When we got a new building I was suggested to (too late) put OM3 fibre in even if we were sticking to 1g connections. It required (over any reasonable distance) for 10g, but will run 1g fine.

 

That way you can go 10g at a later time when/if you need to/can afford it

 

 

EDIT**: forgot about the Cat6, definitely Cat6, everything here is Cat6 from core to desktop, no point in installing Cat5e, it was past it a while back

Agree with Smithson83... CAT 6 definately. You're gonna have some serious bandwidth needed in there. Nearly all switches auto negotiate the speed. Just get the right Gbic module for the new block for when you upgrade the rest

At minimum any fibre cable fitted these days should be at least OM3 ideally OM4 if your run is under 300m, fitting anything else is a waste of money. OM3/4 can actually support up to 100GB so its totally future proofed, for our switches the prices between 1GB links and 10GB links is only about £400 so to too bad.

If your run is over 300m you need to be fitting OS1/2 fibre and then the cost of the modules will rise sharply.

 

For internal cable there isn't any point using Cat6 is doesn't really give you anything over Cat5e, you should be looking to fit Cat6a or even Cat7 (but thats mega money and very time consuming to fit so costs more to install).
