WebDav and working with iOS suggestions?

First post (well second after the welcome post). So hello everyone!

 

Was hoping for some suggestions on WebDav and iOS? Would like to hear what people are using, pros and cons, that type of thing.

 

In our environment we have WebDav setup on IIS, and got it all working fine using windows Authentication pointing to users own home shares etc. Problem was its intended for iOS use, and we'd seen the likes of 'Foldr' which looked great but didn't realise you need their server side software, which is a little pricey considering we would like to do it for free essentially. We've had a gander at WebDav Nav app, which works pretty well, but we we're hoping for somethign that was a little more professional and sleeker, no adverts, that type of thing.

 

So would like to hear how all you guys and gals have done it!

Sorry Can't help you... We use Foldr

 

I can say for me it has been worth the money, yes it is expensive... But it does everything for you, set it up in a VM, and it deals out the shares, handles permissions etc. The iOS app is quite good now v2 just released and it just works

Yea that's what I feared, peeps will tell me its good... Had a load of issues with WebDav getting it all set up then found Foldr uses its own to work. A little frustrating just to can it all in for something else. It does look nice mind, used a little demo, and its the thing we're after on the client side, just not server.

I must admit, I did try going down the "Build it and he will come" route, but gave up quite early, and paid for Foldr. It does sting a little paying all that money for essentially a WebDav-Ad integrator though, but I figured, my time and hairline was worth it.

 

+1 for a neat solution and cann Foldr

 

However it would have to:

iOS - Login, user specific shared displayed.

Non Domain Windows - WebDAV map, https://foldrserver/drive (all user shares in folders here).

Chromebook (or any web browser) https://folderserver, login, all user shares available.

 

(tbh, it was the client side of things that sent me over the edge, it's all fine setting up a WebDAV server to dish out the shares, but I couldn't find a client side solution that was neat, manually adding individual shares and not being able to fix them etc was a headache in the making)

Wait what?? Where? How? How have I missed this if its true? And it works with Windows IIS WebDav?

I didn't know that. Does it basically take the options out for the web interface and drive mapping?

 

If it was significantly cheaper I may consider it next year as a downgrade if possible. But I do like the extras, we're thinking of getting in some chromebooks, and this would be ,not perfect, but close. And am thinking of using this for simplified staff external access, one port, job done.

Yes, the web portion becomes disabled other than the admin side. Just the iOS app works.

 

It's about £15 a device per year but it is purchased on a subscription, so you renew each year. If you have just a few devices then it's ideal but if you have a lot then there is a point at which it will become more cost effective to buy the full edition.

 

Minimum is 5 licenses and you buy upwards in bundles of 5.

Very interesting. Sounds good on our own internal device front, but we wish to give access to students and staff on their own personal devices.

Foldr is nice, and much easier to install than IIS. No exageration in saying I got it up and running in a proxied environment in 15minutes. I ran virtual box and imported the appliance, configured TCP/DNS/Proxy info using the CLI and that was that.

 

The ios app is slick and student friendly, much slicker than WebDavNav for example. It will let you do as much with it as Apple will let you at this moment in time.

 

However, Foldr IS expensive IMO but its upto your SMT whether it's value for money, I think any school serious about iOS intergration into the curriculum will give it some serious consideration
