There is loads of info on the web - here's the first hit with two popular o/ses How to Dual-boot Linux and Windows (on a PC with Windows 7 already installed) For mounting home dirs stored on an M$ server, Samba is your friend.
SYNACK Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I use virtualbox or even hyper-v, I just don't trust Linux on non-exact-Linux-approved hardware. I have had it hash its own file system so many times after a powercut or crash thanks to shoddy old school laptop drivers or just plain randomness. Queue the Linux brigade to berate me over my experience but it stands. In a VM it is contained and quite well behaved, ESXi is also a nice Linux derivative but again on the right hardware.

For a terminal the kids can play with, install in on anything (virtual or physical) and let them rip. If you want a gui it'd have to be virtualbox. No way would I faff around with dual-booting.
