Messy roaming profiles question

Hi all,

 

Having problems with one of our sites. Its taking ages to logon and I think its probably due to profiles. I want to delete the profiles from the local PC and re-configure it all again. These are fully patched Windows 7 PCs.

 

However I cannot delete the profile folders from the PC. If I do so, they all simply return when I reboot and log in again.

 

I have tried manually deleting the relevant folders in the C:\users\ directory

I have tried running delprof2 which tells me it has deleted the folders, but it doesn't.

I have deleted the relevant entries from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

 

Despite this, the folders return.

 

Second, and possibly related question. When I log on to the PC as a domain admin (i.e. as my own name), I only get a temporary user profile. I assume this is because there is a local profile already created for my username, which is corrupted or locked in some way.

 

So I think I need to delete the local profile for my username too. But using the processes above it appears to delete, but then returns next time.

Sorry. I should have said I've deleted them there, and they aren't listed in advanced system settings. Only the folders exist in c:\users\

you didn't delete your username folder or reg key did you? Sometimes I've accidentally deleted the reg key for myself, so then I have to log on with the local admin account and delete the folder too.

 

I've got into a habit of creating a folder called OLD PROFILES though in the C:\users folder, because I've deleted peoples work in the past by accident. So now I just move the profile folders into there.

 

The folders will re-create when that user logs on again. If they do have roaming profiles, the profile will be stored on the server. Deleting the local profile will just cause logon times to increase further. In the user properties in AD is there a UNC path in the profile bar?

I don't think I have deleted my own registry key.

 

The problem is that the individual PCs have lots of old profiles, that are completely unrelated the the machines current use or users. I'd like to remove these. When I try, they recreate when the machine is rebooted.

 

Secondly, when I logon with my personal account which is a domain account, I only ever get a temporary profile. This creates a folder TEMP.MAES.00X (MAES is our domain name), instead of a profile with my username.

 

Yes, we are using a roaming profile with a UNC path in AD.

Are the profiles empty when recreated?

No, they contain only one folder Appdata, which contains within it the following nested folders

 

Appdata-Local-Microsoft-InputPersonalisation-Text-Harvester

 

Only the last folder has a file in it, which is TextHarverster.dat

I had a similar issue on a laptop and using a forced gpupdate (then restart) fixed it.

this sounds like something I had when 1st using vista/7

if you have just removed the user accounts profile folder without cleaning the registry hive the computer wont be able to recreate the user profile on the machine a symptom of this is new users which had profiles being logged in with a temp profile.

might be worth clearing the registry of any old SIDs.

I find something like delprof is create for deleting profiles as it does the registry as well (HKLM\software\Microsoft\windowsNT\currentversion\profilelist)

have you created a default profile? as that might have an issue?.

if you have manually cleared out the registry then the machine should recreate the user ok.

have ended up creating a new user for them for now,
