ubuntu How to on WIKI

Ok this is a quick question. I am now hooked on linux playing with it all the time (much to kids annoyance filter at home squid dansguardian) I know I am new to linux but i would like to write some how to and basic setup ie the one i have ubuntu webmin with squid sarge and dansguardian module installed and set up as a proxy (makes network at home run faster) if you think it would help please vote i will also do one on raid as well and intrest and i will do it as i have got a lot of free time. The problem I found was that there are a lot of how toos but there are all over the place would be good to goto one site and find them all.

Edugeek wiki is where i was thinking of putting it and as i am looking at doing it via a vmserver i can put some screen shots as well.

Ok I have started I am doing a basic Ubuntu 6.06 first with a basic ssh access to it. I will then be doing Webmin squid Dansguardian VMware (server) If any one else has something that they would like a how to for i have got enough free time i will put it on my list and do it (including screen shots).

The best thing about Ubuntu is its existing documentation, but as someone previously stated the more the merrier i guess..

 

If you want a linux hobby, forget ubuntu and get into slackware

 

Slackware is a real hobbiest OS, super fun!

OK first bit is up. The main reason i am doing this is there are many resorses out there but they are all over the place none of them are in one place and i hope to add to this IE raid install, dansguardian, vmware, webmin, and more if I find any.

Guessing this is using the Server edition, not the Dektop edition?

Yes but I have found it better and to add the desktop you just apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and its there. I like to decide what to install Can do a desktop version if you like. but that way i only need one ubuntu disc and if i want a desktop i can put it on simple. But most of the stuff i work with I use server and remote to it.

How goes your work on the guide.

 

I recently started work on this as a side project myself. I had it all set up and working with the version 2.8 of dans guardian from the repositories but upon trying to enable authentication I discovered that requires version 2.9 which needs installed from source and its all gona a bit pete tong from there

 

I think I have everything configged right but the startup script seems to have an error. A step by step guide would be handy. On the bright side I've learnt loads about Linux the last couple of days doin this and enjoyed it.

I had a similar problem and used ident as a service on the clients and it just works.

 

No problems.

OK please can I have a guinea pig or 2 to try out the how to ubuntu done and webmin done I know they are very basic but they are meant to be simple see what you think dansguardian is on the way. Any comments good bad or ways to improve please pm me as i don't want this thread filled with thing like you spelt webmin wrong. I still want to know if i have just pm me. There are screen shots but due to restrictions on wiki at the moment I cant put them up but am looking of a way around that. All comments will be taken note of and implemented if its possible.

Another guniea pig reporting in.

 

I'd already done a fair bit of trial and error learning myself with 7.1 server but in the intrests of consistency when I follow your guide for dansguardian I went through you 6.01 + webmin guides today and all seems totally fine. You have a little bit of repition in it static IP near the end of the server one and open-ssh repeated in both but it doesn't hurt to rerfesh the ssh part I think. Clear and concise guide thank you. I look forward to following the dansguardian one.

 

Will you be doing dans guardian with AD integration or with ident for user based logging and filtering? I've been experiementing with AD integration with varying results myself. In cluding a hilarious mess up I related earlier were I had the linux box authenticating its own local user logins via AD
