DVD sharing across the network

I have been given 10 DVDs and asked to "put them on the networ" for teachers to share. These are active music DVDs that have teaching plans in PDF and accompanying dvd lessons. My issue is that firstly they equate to approx 50Gb of storage required but also I mentioned the issue with bandwidth if multiple users will be accessing these materials at the same time. Obviously also the issue with copyright etc.

 

How do you go about sharing DVDs in your establishments and recommendations for best way to do this.

We have a specific media server for hosting videos and resources of this type. Bandwidth shouldn't be a problem unless you're still running on 10mbit to clients or a 100mbit backbone for your network. If they need it, and licensing allows, who are we to argue?

 

Most educational resources like that allow for network storage but that's far from the rule, so make sure you're covered, even if it's a quick phone call to the supplier/publisher of said software. Plenty of threads on Edugeek about the dos and donts of other media (commercial DVDs, films etc)

I do just that, rip it and put it into a share somewhere, however I would draw the line way before 50 gigs! I would recommend that you look into purpose built software with such a big library of DVD's, it would be more manageable as a video resource for the whole school. In my previous job we used Clickview which I highly recommend - I'm not sure what the price is but do look into it. Edited October 1, 2014 by JJanisch
