We have had a 2 host virtualisation setup installed over summer and the 2 hosts have the standard version of 2012 R2 installed even though i have got datacenter licenses. Has anyone else converted from standard to datacentre in an live environment where the hosts are running VMs.

I have been on the net to see how to do it and seen this..

Q: Can I switch a Windows Server 2012 Standard Server to Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Server without having to reinstall? | Windows Server 2012 content from Windows IT Pro

As long as you have the data enter licenses, that's ok. You don't need to bother changing the Windows instance to DC, there is no difference in terms of features

Sorry to hijack, did you outsource the work or do it inhouse? PM me if you like.

I'm 99% sure it can be done with DISM /online /Set-Edition: /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula but you can't do it to a domain controller
