Chrome Books and Cloud Print - Won't Print Unless Manually Added

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Morning All,

Have 30 Chrome Books and manage them via the Google. Have a printer that I have added to Cloud Print (via Paper Cut) and this appears in the admin console on Google. I'm then able to share the printer and assign it to our Chrome Books.

The issue is when a student logs in and the printer is selected and printed from nothing happens!

If I manually share the same printer and the student adds it it works fine.

Tried all sorts and no luck. Anyone else had similar issues?

Only difference I can see is if it's pushed out by the Google Admin console show up as "Local Destinations" and if I manually share the same printer it it comes up as "Google Cloud Print".

Hi

resurrecting this thread as i am having the same issue - was it ever resolved?

Am using dell chromebook with papercut MF.

adding cloud printer from console means that it shows up in local destinations but does not print - nothing comes out.

Adding same printer by sharing it to a used and printing under google cloud print it works.

Im confused. Your post and the OP say that you have added printers via the google admin console? I didn't think this was possible? Also, the OP says that he shared the printers with the CHOMEBOOKS? I wasn't aware this was possible? Im sure that its only possible to share printers with users via distrbituion groups?

EDIT:

I've not used papercut, so thats probably where confusion is coming from?

If you have a managed chromebook i.e. has a device licence then you can enroll it and control it through the google admin console.

Under device management - chrome - device settings you can enable cloud printers and add them in.

They then appear in local destinations when a user selects print. It says printing when a user prints but nothing comes out.

If they select same printer under google cloud print after you have shared it with them then it will work

Please bear with me as I'm not 100% sure this is the correct answer; it would be worth raising a support call to verify it.

My understanding is that adding a cloud printer via the management console will add it as a printer to the local machine and that won't send the user details to papercut and will prevent it printing.

Adding via a user will allow cloud print to send the user details and hence why it works.

Our workaround is to publish the link to the cloud printer in a Google classroom that all students have and get them to install it.

Not ideal but the only way we have it working due to the limitations above, unless you allow printing without user verification.

oo nice. I have set up on my own and its worked. I seem to remember looking at this before and we chose to just do it by user rather than device in the end (think it was to more easily monitor people who waste paper/ink)

anyway, all i can think of is the obvious troubleshooting things: Remove printers from Google Cloud Print Service, re add them then add to Device Settings again. - Test using different proxies (student + Teacher). Or even test from outside the school or from a personal hotspot on a phone - Make sure chromebook is up to date.

thanks for reply.

Chromebook is up to date.

Have tried adding and removing printers.

The fact the same printer works through cloud print section makes me think printer and proxy is ok - maybe something with papercut.

We can control and monitor printing through papercut.

I can't send out personal invitations to all students - am going to look at sharing to groups.

Does it work if they log into the client at https://papercut/client ?

what address do you mean? I can login to http://ourpapercutserver:9191 but makes no difference.

ok, we need to make staff login to that address so that they can select which account to print to (shared departmental accounts).

Students don't need to, hence my assumption that it may be to do with user logins when deployed to device rather than to a user.

we have some staff on shared department accounts but the test ones I am using don't.

Still experimenting when i get time - will post if I get resolution.

I have just been testing this using the same setup - Printers shared in Papercut and set up via the google admin device management - No Joy. If I add the printer to the user when I try to print the print dialog seems to hang and do nothing BUT if i log into our papercut server http://ourpapercut:9191/client then if pops up with the option to select the account im printing from then the document prints out but the print dialogue still hangs as though it is not printing Edited by gdrinkall

Hi,

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but we've just got Chromebooks and I've come across the same problem as the original poster (although we're not using Papercut). Was this problem ever resolved?

I shared the printers using the Google admin console and they worked perfectly for a few days and then suddenly stopped. I'm now seeing the same printers in the Local Destinations section as in the Google Cloud Print section.

Crazy that Chromebooks have been used in so many schools for years and we're still getting issues like this.

I think I've just answered my own question!

I did more hunting around in the Google Admin Console and noticed there's a section near the bottom under the heading 'Print Preview Default'. Normally it's set to 'Use default print behaviour' but you can change it to 'Define the default printer'. When you do that a new set of options appear below.

You can select the printer type- 'Cloud & Local printers', 'Cloud only' or 'Local only'. Of course we want Cloud Only to avoid this annoying problem of Chromebooks not being able to print to the local ones. You can then specify the name of the default printer.

Just tested on a Chromebook and it works. Only strange thing is that they appear under the 'Local destinations' section instead of the 'Cloud Print' section. Maybe because the Chromebook is currently in school, connected to the same LAN as the printer? But if that was the case, tethering the CB to my phone would make them appear in the Cloud Print section, but it doesn't.

Anyway, as long as it works, I don't care.
