New Haswell-E X99 PC - Any recommendations where to buy from?

I've been contemplating treating myself to a new Haswell-E X99 based rig and wondered if anyone had any recommendations where to buy a pre-built system from? I still may end up ordering parts and building it myself but I'm at the point where virtually all the components in my PC could use an upgrade so wondered if buying an entire system might make more sense.

 

Had a look at Scan and Overclockers. Anyone use either of them before?

but to answer your question, overclockers are fantastic with things like this. Rather than buying online if you're spending alot give them a ring and chat to them about it, you don't have to use the components on their prebuilt specs on the website either (or post on the pre sales section of customer services area of the forum). They do a damn good job of the cabling inside their pre built PCs too.

I built my last PC from components, and I may well do the same again, but I wanted to get quotes from a couple of places first to see how they compare. I've been lurking on the OCUK forums for a while and the folk on there seem pretty knowledgeable. I'd probably want to go for a custom build since I'm a bit fussy about which components it's fitted with! Both Scan and OCUK seem to offer a custom build service which I like the idea of.

 

I also like the look of the new X99 PC Alienware are releasing next month but it's probably just a load of cobbled together Foxconn parts in a bling case with a ludicrous markup on the price tag. Looks cool though

Well bling is one word for it, i'd opt for "abortion" myself but each to their own haha

 

I wish i could afford X99 and DDR4 right now, I keep tempting myself into it but my realisation that i play nothing but dota puts an end to that pretty quick m.2 SSD, X99, 16gb+ ddr4, six core cpu.... I'd sit there with benchmarks running all day, sod gaming, just show off raw performance figures lol

 

I've had good experiences buying from scan and Ocuk, both personal and work. Ebuyer are the one only e-tailer i'd avoid (Had poor experiences with both personal and work purchases there!) novatech aren't bad too, and will do custom builds (may have to phone them) but i doubt their prices will be the best....get brilliant prices for work, often knocking off huge amounts but their web prices for personal purchases aren't overly competitive.

Aria seem to have the cheapest 5960X, not looked at motherboards or DDR4 RAM though as far as prices for them

I'm not building an X99 machine - too much £££

 

Ive got a Z97 mobo lol

 

I was only suggesting Aria with regards to buying the CPU and parts from for an X99 system

 

That 5960X is a beast of a cpu though !!

 

See what the prices are like come january !!

 

Maybe use the z97 board and an i5 cpu to build a NAS using freenas / open filer and get the parts for an x99 system !!

 

Although GPU wise I will only have the gtx 760 lol

Yeah 5960X is insane, it's similar to when the 3930k was released, or the 4970k? (i think).

 

Hopefully drop in price within 6 months, if AMD throw out another CPU that may / may not challenge it.

 

If anyone is thinking of building a X99 rig, upwards of £3000 for a 5 year safety net.

I don't think any Haswell-E part can be classified as "low spec". Oh noes only six Haswell cores with quad channel DDR4 and 28 PCI-E lanes! I'm such a pauper!

AMD ain't gonna be competitive till at least 2016, that's when they're targeting their new architecture for. They've as much as admitted themselves that the Bulldozer/Piledriver/whatever design has been a steaming pile of, and that the module design they used was rubbish.

Some people just love the technology, personally i'd love to upgrade.....i don't need it, nor will i need it for some time i imagine, but i still want it! It's an expensive hobby in the same way some people are with cars really. X99 and 8 core CPU, watercooling, overclocking and see how good you can get those benchmark results, it's good fun!

Hoping to use it as a test rig to learn more using virtual machines although currently like you said very expensive as will need at least 16gb of RAM and a motherboard etc, will be at least £1,500 for the cpu, motherboard and ram

 

Presume a 4790k intel cpu would be good enough for that and gaming ?

Definitely, my work PC is a 3770k at stock speeds and 16gb ram, i've often got 3-4 VMs running at once. If you can put 32gb in that'd be the most helpful thing with VMs, CPU isn't so crucial unless you're doing stuff in them that means they'll be racking up the cpu usage while you're not inside them. That and a nice big SSD

Final GeForce GTX 980 Specifications Revealed | eTeknix few more details on that one, be interesting to see how these perform. On paper the 980 looks like it's going to equal a 780 (non-ti), but I'm guessing by that pixel fillrate going up so much that may not be the case perhaps. Either way though, must lower energy usage which is good, as graphics cards have started to get a bit silly in recent times.

The 980 is meant to be about 10% faster than a 780 Ti, although we will have to wait for some actual reviews to find out if this is true.

 

 

The significantly lower power consumption and five display connectors (3 x DisplayPort 1.2, 1 x HDMI 2.0 and 1 x DL-DVI) are welcome improvements too.
