Block iOS8 upgrade

Hi all,

 

Does anyone know the URL which iOS updates come from so that we can block it? I've found several articles saying to block mesu.apple.com so that they devices can't check to see if there is an update, but presumably thay will mean that if someones device has noticed there's an update to do whilst at home, they can still download the update when they get to school? We don't really want 800+ devices downloading it at once.

Probably until they can support it. MDM solutions for example don't always work right away.

 

Its like saying why don't you update all your PC's to Windows 8 the day it comes out.

Not that I'm aware of, we just don't want 800+ devices downloading a (potentially) 1GB update all at once over our internet connection.

Ah got ya, it might be worth getting a Cache Server setup if you have 800+ devices thus download 1 Update and all the iPads will connect to the Server and download it internally rather than through your internet connection?

That's a nice idea but it depends on your school being able to access the internet from a unique IP address. If you use a county wide proxy then it doesn't work.

Yeah, we found out the hard way!

we have been advised not to upgrade here because of changes to the networking in these devices which may have adverse effects on being able to access the network/devices, until its all looked at further.

If you don't cache it then also throttle your users traffic, that is what we do for our wifi pupils.

If you can block the ipsw extension. I think that's what get downloaded when using iTunes l. Not sure what ota does. You would definitely need SSL interception.

In order to stop devices downloading iOS updates you need to either block or redirect the following url...

We find this when some primary school potentially 50 miles away installs it and all our devices stop working :@
