I'm not surprised that the 'industry' is now talking about replacing TCP/IP with something which addresses advasnces in technology and internet use since it went mainstream in the 90's.

Based on pre-standard implementations that you'll then have to replace with new kit when the standards are formulated.

I think that therein lies teh rub. The whole net is relaint on TCP/IP that to introduce a new system would just be far too expensive that it would have to involve the introduction of dual purpose networking kit over a long, long, period of time.

Then again, as with IPv6 this has been happening for quite a while now with relatively little uptake of the protocol to date.

If they did launch a new protocol that was so restrictive or intrusive and consumers had the option of sticking with TCP/IP it may simply be that it dies a death. It wouldn't be the first time a technology has failed due to lack of consumer demand.
