Seareach is your best bet, £800 per thousand, tamper proof crackleback. You can even get your school logo on them and specify a three letter designation at the start of the serialised barcode - which is useful for barcode scanning later.

Say for example; your school name is oak farm school and your asset tags were designated OFS00001, then you can script your asset database to recognise when an asset is being added or searched for.
