MS Virtual PC 2007 & VM Ware ver 6

Righty ho - I already have MS Virtal PC 2007 installed - [ with a XP SP2 virtual PC already up and running ] - my question is, will VM Ware sit along side it ok or will it cause problems ? [ I've already had two BSOD on my new Vista setup - cause- the Realtek 8168 drivers causing an IRQ not less or equal on the ndis.sys library. I am hoping the updated drivers have now stopped that....

Has anyone or is anyone using VM Ware 6 and MS Virtual PC 2007 on the same setup without any problems ?

 

I am going to install both on an old RM pc but its soooooo god dam slow its like waiting for a bus......

Is there any pressing reason for running both products alongside each other? VMWare Workstation 6 is a far superior product to MS VPC.

Agreed. I migrated from VPC to VMWare server some time ago and have never looked back.

If both products try to make use of the processor's built-in hardware support for virtualisation (depends if you have a new processor that supports AMD-V or Intel VT), then you'll probably find that only one virtualisation product at a time can run.

 

If you want to run both programs at once, there might be an option to turn off hardware VM support which might enable the two to coexist.

 

I use VirtualBox on my PC, which manages to do efficient virtualisation without hardware support. You could give that a go if you need two systems running alongside each other.

I've just started playing around with the VMWare converter tool - very interesting indeed.

 

It's a fantastic tool. We were having problems with our MIS server. I converted it to a virtual image, took it home and worked out how to fix the problem (safe in the knowledge that I could mess things up and start again). When I found the fix I went and applied it to our live server and it worked like a charm.

How did you convert it to a virtual image tscnmuk ?

 

Is that part of the ver 6 workstation ?

No it is a free piece of software called VMWare Converter (Imaginatively) which is downloadable from the VMWare site. Replying in the quick reply section so can't be bothered to turn this into a proper link but:

Thanks, with a bit of luck I'll be able to convet our MIS server, so when it comes to the next upgrade I can test it first using a virtual image.
