2012 WinSXS Folder Clean up

Whats the easiest way to clean up the windows SXS Folder.

 

Ive installed the User Interface and Infransture to get disc clean up but it hasnt touched that folder?

Done that. Didnt touch it.

Try this (from an elevated Command Prompt)...

 

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

You'll never get much more than a couple of gig out of that folder - best left well alone.

To see how much space can be reclaimed without deleting anything run the command below:

 

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

 

Using the DISM command in my previous post above will prevent you from uninstalling old updates though.

As long as you're "cleaning" it using one of the Microsoft supported methods you should be fine.

 

That said, I tend to leave the WinSxS folder alone on servers since it is easy to increase the size of the C:\ drive.
