exchange 2003 pop3 and push email

Hi

Im currently looking into enabling pop3 on the exchange server so we can then use push email to mobile devices both within our wireless network and over the internet.

 

1) what are the pros and cons of using a frontend server and can push email be done with just a backend server.

 

2) How would i forward the ports across from the firewall and could i use the same dns name instead of pop3.whatever.com and smtp.whatever.com.

 

3) what came 1st the chicken or the egg?

Why on earth do you want to enable pop3?

 

Outlook mobile access uses OMA and Exchange Active Sync protocols.

These have now been licensed by Symbian and Nokia so Exchange supports more mobile devices than ever.

In addition you can enable RPC over HTTP on a single server (SBS does it by default) but standard servers just need a little tweaking.

 

You just need a split DNS setup to do it seamlessly if you have one name inside your LAN and a different FQDN such as myschool.local and anotherschool.lea.sch.uk

Or you could spend a load of money and go down the blackberry route, personally I prefer my HTC touch II with Exchange any day.

i think i confused myself somewhere while reading up on all this on the weekend,

I have looked at RPC over HTTP but for some reason on our exchange it was greyed out, i assume because i would need a front end server, need to double check that.

As for the dns, well thats not needed i guess as activesync connects over the OWA link, which we have already.

and yes we already have a blackberry server but now they are bored and want smartphones and so push email

 

so sorry no i dont need pop3

Sounds like youre halfway there already.

You will need to export your ssl into a cer file for import into your smartphones.

Some telco's block this action on smartphones, I had to hack a couple of spv's on Orange to get the cert installed.

Once installed you can sync easily, all you need is in those two links.

hmm seems i cant make our 1 exchange server, a RCP front end server, the option is greyed out, i can only make it a backend server.

dont want to add another exchange server

searching the net for answer now

is there a prereq for a front end server?

we use Exchanege 2003 sp2 Enterprise
