Just installed Windows 8, how do I get the start menu back, reading various articles that say install 3rd party software. I thought there was a fix from Microsoft?

Nope nothing from Microsoft.

There is. It's called Windows 9.

 

Microsoft's original plan was to make this update a much bigger and more important release. The Windows team originally was aiming to make the new "mini" Start Menu part of this second update, but scrapped that plan a couple of months ago, deciding instead to make the new Start Menu a feature of Windows "Threshold." Threshold, likely to be called Windows 9, is still sounding like a Spring 2015 deliverable.

You're making the assumption that it's broken, give it a little time, it is really not that bad especially if you use the windows key as a search key for application names with the keyboard like has been possible since Vista anyway.

The new Start menu isn't included with the Windows 8.1 August Update (a.k.a Windows 8.1 Update 2) and there isn't going to be an Update 3.

How do you know you don't like the Start Screen if you don't use it? It might take a while to overcome 19 years of muscle memory from using the old Start Menu, but it's definitely possible.

Or just ignore it. Since boot to desktop was introduced I hardly see the Start Screen.

To be completely honest I initially railed against the change but in reality it's no big deal (even teachers can get their head around it ).

Im a real Win 8 fanboy but other than searching, I don't use it. The speed of the search in Win 8 makes any kind of start menu/screen pointless.
