System centre

Morning,

 

I am trying to set-up a new server with 2012R2 & system centre DPM on it.

 

Now i know DPM needs SQL so my question is...

 

I have already purchased a copy of system centre licence.

 

Does that allow me SQL instance as well? Or do i need to buy a new licence for that?

I think you'll need an SQL licence too if you want to use full blown SQL. We use SQLExpress for our DPM server (which is included on the DPM media) as it's more than capable for our DPM deployment.

You will indeed need an SQL licence - full blown one may well be worth it if you're making good use of SCCM also. Maybe worth considering if you also run an MIS that uses SQL server, having a dedicated, damnquick SQL server to run them all.

Sorry but the 2 prior posters are incorrect. Being licensed to run System Center includes the right to run SQL Server Standard. It is a license that only allows you to use it for System Center - you cannot use that same SQL server for other software.

localzuk be right. we have sql installed for system center under t's own licence. we did try once to make it work with the main sql server but I upset the sql admin too much with it and so I look after it myself (eg it gets on with things and I never look at it)

(must point out I did not say that at all @localzuk ! - didn't even know that, we already had the relevant licensing in place for SQL servers and assumed the need to purchase one for SCCM)
