Primary Broadband Costs

Just as a general question, how much do you pay for your broadband connection. I've just spend the morning scraping the chins of my primaries off the floor after they found out how much they have just been billed for it! And another question is what do you actually get for your money?

About £350 a year for a basic SOHO 1Mbit ADSL line - yes, that is for the school, we're out in the sticks and private anyway so no consortiums/superfast connections etc for us

- 2MBit down 1Mbit up dedicated

- 24H Help desk

- 50GB data per month, includes traffic up and down

- 1x domain name and DNS hosting for subnets

 

Speed wise its New Zealand, that actually qualifies as pretty good down here. Getting something like 10Mbit would be around NZ$3000 a month

Geez!!!! The average bill just landed here was on average in the couple of thousands of pounds depending on number of pupils. We are supposed to have a superfast 10meg connection for that, web filtering and a few other bits that most don't use as far as I know.

IIRC ours is in the range of £3k per year for a 10Mbit fibre with filtering and Easymail Plus (roughly 600 kids). Oh, and by the way - we are a middle school so have a bit of both primary and secondary.

Thats exactly the kind of example I was asked about when the bill arrived! Need to ask what exactly we are getting for the money. We pay extra to another company for email and web site hosting, so that not included in the broadband costs.

A few things for people to remember. If you are connected via an RBC then your do *not* just pay for a raw connection, even places like Lincolnshire that take the raw connection from EMBC then add things on top.

 

You may be paying for mail and mail filtering, internet filtering, video conferencing (local to your LA / RBC and access to the JVCS too) ... and then all the things your LA / RBC may have purchased.

 

Yes, you can get cheaper for a raw connection via ADSL but that does not give you eveything that you might get from an RBC.

 

Then again ... some schools don't need the extra bits.
