Personal itunes accounts on staff laptops

So when having a bit of a look at some of the staff provided laptops, 70% seem to have installed their own itunes accounts with their own music.

We have always been fairly relaxed until now on restricting laptops through group policy.

However, now I getting teachers coming to me saying they ‘need’ a new laptop as theirs is slow. Then I find their itunes folder on the desktop at 108gb.

I now need to apply more formal guidelines and ensure they are implemented. Because they have obviously been able to do what they like up till now, I’m going to get some grief when I start uninstalling stuff. Anyone got any links to legal info or policies that I can quote about having private accounts/files etc on a school laptop?

not really legal information, but as the laptop is not theirs but the schools, you can uninstall what you want on there as it is not their laptop.

id be more worried about the amount of utter @*&$ it puts in appdata esp if tehy ever back up iphones/ipads as i dont redirect appdata as certain programs dont like it but this means logons can be painflly slow if someone has itunes

Yes it was the slow login time that prompted the user to come to me. I have also just found a bunch of ripped music from someones cd collection on the staff network drive!

Staff showing dvd rips from torrent sites of anything from the new lego film to the Natural world etc

 

I've seen the "head of cluster" school cheerfully hand out rips of the-film-of-the-book the kids are studying in English.

How rude! I hope he's on the bottom of your order of response list!

 

The "it's for the kids" excuse does seem to trump any legal objections IME.

Email your LM, CC the Head and Deputy Heads.

 

I am very sure there is "Personal usage only" on the terms and conditions or the "Installed on your own device". May want to confirm but I am sure it was one of those two a while back when I last checked. The devices must be owned by the School including the music.

 

Once checked you can add the "This is illegal" in the email. The question of "Need" will not matter to these companies and because your the system administrator it will fall on your head unless over ruled.
