We are looking to go down the Xenapp route...

 

We have and 50 fte EES agreement

We have 412 pupils

Looking at 100 concurrent users

We will be using Hyper-V (Windows Datacenter 2012R2)

3 Hosts

each host will have 4 virtual xenapp servers (Windows Standard 2012R2)

there will be 2 dcs (pdc & bdc) (Windows Standard 2012R2)

there will be 1 file & print server (Windows Standard 2012R2)

there will be 1 dhcp/dns server (Windows Standard 2012R2)

 

So my question is...

 

How many of the following....

 

Windows Datacenter 2012R2 Licenses

RDS CALS

User CALS

Windows Standard 2012R2 Licenses

 

My guess is

 

Windows Datacenter 2012R2 Licenses (3)

RDS CALS (100)

User CALS (???)

Windows Standard 2012R2 Licenses (16)

If your hosts have datacenter on then you don't license your virtual servers as well, so I don't thinky ou need 16 standard licenses + the licenses on the VMs.

 

You can use FTE to license RDS cals and User CALs, so you can have 50 FTE RDS and User CALs. Then it depends on the endpoint devices accessing the Xenapp servers and what you provide the end user with as to whether you need to get VDA licenses.

 

That is my interpretation of the rules from speaking to a MS reseller very recently with similar requirements to yours.

Is that correct? I was under the impression, but could be wrong, that you would have to licence RDS based on the number of users or devices rather then the FTE (which didn't make a lot of sense, but we bought the licences outright in the end).

 

My calc's for your licencing, but only a guess, would be:

 

3 x Datacenter licences (assuming 2 processor per host)

50 FTE x Educational desktop (Desktop licence, Windows Server CAL, Office)

? x RDS CALS depending on whether you can licence by FTE or whether you need to licence either Per User or Per Device (so either 50 or 462 or x number of access devices).

As far as I was told.

 

Tou can license your RDS/ Xendesktop hosted sessions by FTE as long as your device they are connecting from has a valid Windows OS on it (or a VDA license). So if you have XenDesktop hosts, 60 FTE but 150 ThinClients (running a none Windows OS), you would need to license the FTE RDS licenses (60), this would also cover students) and also then 150 VDA licenses (which aren't cheap). if you had Windows thinclients then you would only need the 60 FTE.

 

This is as always a bit of a minefield and the above way might not even be the cheapest if you have huge numbers of devices that require a VDA license then it is very expensive and there might be a better method, our VDA to student ratio si quite low now though.

 

Also it does depend on if you allow external access, as for external access each student and FTE would need an RDS CAL (which might be why you needed to go down that route).
