Anyone using these?

We are kitting out a new Schools ICT Centre in Lancashire and are looking at putting these in the training room switch cabinates with GBIC modules enabling a fibre upling to the server room.

At just under £600 for a 48 port managed GB switch it seems a great package. Has anyone had any experience of them?

Is it really a managed switch? I looked at them recently but couldn't decide what a 'smart switch' was. They do a 24/48 port 10/100/1000 layer 2 managed. The GSM7248 is a layer 2 managed switch. It seems the 748T has some additional features compared to an unmanaged switch, but not as many as a managed one. I haven't used either though, so I can't comment too much.

One thing I will say regarding Netgear Switches is to flash it with an upto date bios as soon as you get it.

 

Got a FSM750S recently, and it decided to lockup every night and knock out any switch attached to it. The bios was about 9 revisions out of date.

 

After the flash all was well.

I got one of them, and have since removed it. It did lock up and just stop for no reason, although, it had not been programmed which could have been the problem, also was iffy on fibre uplinks which we used. Also they take about 5-10 minutes to start working when powering on. I do like my netgear stuff though, I think our issues with it is us cutting corners.

From what I have read from Netgears site you MUST configure them before deploying.

I'm going to download the manual and take a butchers.
