office documents slow to open

We use office 2010 and 2013. When a class of say 25-30 try to open an office doc such as a powerpoint template, it will take minutes for the doc to open for any of them. This only happens when they all try at approx the same time. The doc may only be 100k in size so its not a network issue as such, they all have new i5 pc's 1gb network to switch and 4gb to storage. We use virtual 2012 server and qnap storage (which are very fast).

 

Any ideas?
