Moodle login timeouts

Quite often users get "session timeout" before they've even tried to login. Seems to be when it's busier (but by busy we're only talking up to 30 concurrent logins) but happens rather often. Waiting for a little whilst seems to resolve the problem however it takes time out of a lesson.

 

Any clues on where one might start to fix this?

 

Moodle 2.4.6 on Ubuntu 10.04LTS, running on a VM with plenty of grunt. Network speed appears ok - running iperf to a VM machine with 2 hops inbetween gives us 900Mb/s.

There could be a number of cause.

 

Have you tried empting the sessions folder in moodledata directory?

Another reason could be the database is being slow to respond, whats the load like?

Load is near empty; it's pretty much sat there doing nothing. Wouldn't mind testing it though, is there a go-to method of doing this?

(Please bear in mind we have *no* expertise with Moodle, it's being punted off to someone who can soon hopefully!)

Checked the sessions directory which is chock full as I expect but didn't fancy clearing it out without knowing what it does, if it kicks anyone out etc.

We've seen this. Have a look at Settings > Site administration > Server > Session Handling and see if the use database is set. We disabled it on ours and the problem went away. Another method, of course, would be to get the settings right if you are using the database for sessions, but it seems to me to be overkill for session handling.

Ours isn't set (so database isn't being used). I might try changing that later when it's not in use.
