BassTech Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 I am looking into ordering a 4:3 monitor for a classroom. The whiteboard is 4:3 and the existing monitor is 16:9, which is causing the picture to be stretched. I am struggling to find a 4:3 monitor, and can only seem to find 5:4 ones. Would a 5:4 monitor work ok with a 4:3 board? Are they the same? This is the one I was looking at: HANNS.G HX193DPB 19" LED LCD DVI Monitor | Ebuyer.com The board is a SmartBoard is a SB580.
dayzd Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 (edited) 5:4 and 4:3 are different, but very close in all reality. For example, 1280x1024 is a 5:4 ratio. Using the same width at 4:3 would be 1280x960. This means that if you were to play a genuine 4:3 source on a 1280x1024 5:4 display, there would be a small amount of letterboxing (32px above, 32px below). It's a very small difference in pixel aspect ratio, but not one that anyone is going to notice. IMO, a 5:4 monitor will work just fine paired with a 4:3 IWB. If you really want a matching ratio, get a display with a native resolution of 1024x768, as that is a genuine 4:3 resolution. Edited June 12, 2014 by dayzd
ICTDirect_Dave Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Native 1024 x 768 is something I've not seen in some time. As said, 5:4 is close, but not quite, that said, you should have little to no problem with the SB and such a monitor. If you're interested. I can do you 19" HP screens with the same Res as that Hanns.g one (1280x1024) for just £45 Ex
Arthur Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 There's not much in it... 5:4 is slightly wider than 4:3.
spadam Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Have you not got a 1024x768 monitor somewhere else, not connected up to a smartboard, that you could just swap for the widescreen monitor?
sonofsanta Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 1280x1024 monitors are fine - monitor or projector will each handle a slightly funky resolution, so either run a 17" monitor at 1024 x 768 (looks smudgy but the projector looks ace) or at 1280 x 1024 (monitor fine, but text isn't as clear on the projector). We run them at 1024 x 768 where the monitor is a second screen alongside a 1080p monitor, and at 1280 x 1024 where it's the only monitor.
BassTech Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 @ICTDirect_Dave Could you send me a quote for that please? I think we'll go for a 5:4 from what everyone's saying it won't be too noticeable anyway @spadam unfortunately not, all widescreens!
