Windows Backup Access is Denied

Having a problem with the scheduled backup using the built in backup software on Server 2008. It's set to run at 9pm every weekday and saves onto a USB hard drive which has been working perfectly up until recently. All of a sudden, started getting it saying that it has failed. When looking at the error, it's saying that Access is Denied and says that the backup of the volume was stopped before the backup started running. In event viewer, it showing an error with ID 517.

 

If I run the backup manually through Task Scheduler while logged on as the admin it works fine. It's set so that it uses the account "SYSTEM" when running on schedule, and I've tried changing that to the administrator account that works with no joy.

To be honest, this is one good reason why I use Backup Assist. A friendly GUI to take care of backups is considerably easier than using the command prompt.
