foofighterjim Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 So I have been looking into moving from the stock Samsung firmware to CyanogenMod on my S3 (i9300). My dilemma I have is the latest stable release is cm.10.2.0 which I believe is Android 4.3 Jellybean. As this is the same version that my S3 is running on stock is there any point in updating? Are the Snapshot releases generally stable enough to risk? This would enable me to jump to Kit Kat and would probably make the effort worthwhile.
Ant Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Is it worth updating? Definitely yes! Even if going to CM10.2, the latest stable release, and not the later CM11, you'll notice an improvement over the stock Samsung ROM. Well I did anyway. The Milestone Snapshots can be a bit hit or miss lately in my opinion but I've still been giving them a go. M6, the latest, proved to be very buggy on my S3 so I went back to M5. Back on M5 it's been very stable. Waiting a bit after each release and reading the CM forums can give you a bit of an idea whether to upgrade or not. Usually it's no big deal to revert back providing you have backups. I haven't really tried any of the Nightly builds yet. I would recommend doing a full install when upgrading ROMs rather than an upgrade over the last one. Always seems more stable to me. Are you already rooted? Titanium Backup is your friend and will make chopping and changing ROMs far less painful.
synaesthesia Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Damn right do it. Been running KitKat on my S2 for ages and it's given it a whole new lease of life.
NotSoFast Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Rooted and messed with ROMs before on other devices but used the CM installer at the weekend on my S3. Easy peasy. Kit kat is quick and stable so far.
foofighterjim Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 Not rooted in any way. I only have a couple of games such as championship manager & final fantasy that I would need to keep the save data for. Is there backup software that will do this without rooting. I have already downloaded the stock firmware from sammobile just in case it all goes wrong.
Poults Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Personally i would flash a custom kernel to root it and then purchase titanium backup, its a great piece of software with loads of options (freeze unwanted apps, cloud backups instead of local etc). Once you have your apps and data backed up then you are free to experiment.
nikaso Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 What these guys said ^^ I haven't rooted my current phone but experimented with several roms on a previous HTC Desire thanks to Titanium Backup, it really does make it easy peasy. I think I settled with the Oxygen rom in the end because it was minimalist and clean but they seem to have stopped development a while back. Cyanogen was good though.
jonnykewell1 Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 I would do it, just to get rid of all the samsung bloatware. I ran it on my S3 and it was great. I've upgraded now and haven't bothered as yet.
Poults Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 I didn't mind the stock Samsung ROM, I froze all the rubbish and had siyah kernel installed, battery life and stability was good, I did play about with custom ROMs but always ended up back with that combo.
BassTech Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 I did this on my old S3 4.4.2 android cyanogen mod and it breathed new life into my ageing phone. I would recommend you do it and don't look back
foofighterjim Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 Thanks for the replies. I have been off sick today but will have a look at titanium over the weekend.
