Exchange 2003

Hello

 

Can anyone help, we have already got a exchange server 2003 installed on a server 2003 domain and last week it went down completely. So we got another server installed server 2003 on it and done a disaster recovery on the new server and installed exchange 2003. But now what ever you do on the old server such as turn it off or dismount the mailbox store it effects the new server. Both servers are on the same domain.

Are they linked in some way then?

 

Clustering or something - dont know about these lovely advanced things you can do when having more than one server lol

 

Is the old exchange server just a exchange server or does it do other tasks also? is one question that comes to mind.

 

Why are you still running the old server if you have the new server?

 

The way I would have approached it is something like:

 

installed exchange on the new server, copying the stores to the new server, configured it accordingly, then unattached the old server from the domain and if all ok, cleanly installed server 2003 and used it for some other purpose

 

Or lol is this what you have done?

The old server is just an exchange server

I am still running the old server as if I turn it off it will affect the new server as some way they are linked

 

That’s what I did, when I installed the new server it complained saying something like there is already an exchange object on the domain, so I had to use the disaster recovery mode.

Yes Exchange is/has a Directory object(s). anything you do on an exchange console affects the data in the active directory. Therefore any Exchange server on the domain will see these changes. Sounds like you've got a mess because 2 exchange servers think they are the only server on the network. You'll have to remove the old exchange server using the exchange setup application. Otherwise I think there is an article on technet.microsoft.com about forcably removing an old exchange server from a domain.

 

It always pays to visit microsoft and read up all the information before attempting any kind of 'recovery', otherwise things just end up worse.

 

I find using a change management process (from FITS) focuses my mind on what I need to do to get back to where I started in case I make a mistake or if it doesn't work.

ahhh yes - good old uninstalling exchange on the old server - didnt think of that lol - though I'm sure it would have come to me..... in time
