changing ip addresses

In the summer we have to change the ip addresses of everything on the academic network in order that our computers can be part of the network on the county router. This will fix a bunch of things that don't work through our proxies and generally simplify the network.

 

I'm not sure what the best order to change things in is, or maybe use additional ip addresses on the servers?

 

as it is printers, laptops, half the computers are on dhcp already so we can just delete the scope and make a new one.

 

whats left is servers, switches and some computers. any computers we reimagining/updating to win7 we putting on dhcp so it'll be what's left that will need changing to dhcp.

 

Any thoughts about order/how best to change servers & switches?

My process was:

 

Statically set a laptop my current range and run Angry IP Scanner on the current range (just to get everything)

Change the servers IPs to the new range

Change the DHCP scope to the new range

Change any reservations

Turn the switches off/on again (This causes a re-lease on every device)

Re Run the IP Scan

Change the important devices in the left overs list first

Change the IP Printer ports on the print server

Re Run the IP Scan

Plod through the remaining devices and change them

Repeat Steps 9 & 10 until the IP Scan returns only the laptop you set statically

thats a handy thread. I need to check how the switches work with dhcp. could switch them off statics beforehand.
