:( your PC Ran into a Problem, This Problem caused you PC to Restart

Over the last two days this problem has been happening on our Windows 8 Machines Does anyone know why this is happening? The only thing I can think of is its An Update that has caused this as they have been fine up till now and no hardware or software has been installed over the network and also happening on different models of machine.

Have you checked the event logs? As you say, it could be an update. You could try uninstalling the latest group (by date) to see if it improves, or prevent them being installed via WSUS.

I have had a look in the event log and all its says is "Kernel-Power" critical but I have found a post that said change the power option to turn off when closed (something to do with fast boot up) and still having the same problem.

So does it only happen on notebooks and not desktops?

at the minute yes I work on a win 8 desktop and that has been fine.

If you look in GPP, there are numerous power settings you can tweak at this level. Just link it to wherever the computer objects are located in your Active Directory.

See if it creates a dmp file. Check c:\windows\minidump You need the windows sdk to view it. It will tell you the possible cause at the end of the dmp file.

(NOTE: this is dependant on Windows 8 being setup to create minudump files when it BSODs, there's an MS Support article here telling you how to do that: How to configure system failure and recovery options in Windows)

There is a stupidly small 60 something kb windows update that hit one of our machines and caused a similar issue, go into windows update and check if any show up as fails in the log. I simply hid that update so the system did not install it and that stopped the problem crashes.

 

Don't know what the qa department at MS has been smoking lately though.

Can also be driver related.

I was going to suggest your try the driver for the power management that seems to be included on most laptops these days. I know the lenovo ones i've worked with in the past do.
