reggiep Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Our mandatory profile broke last week and was taking ages to log on. So I created a new profile using Mandatory Profiles Solution for Windows 7 | K-5 Computer Lab However some users cannot now save documents once they have created them in word? Having looked at this article "Word could not create the work file" error message when you save a document in Word 2013, Word 2010 or in Office Word 2007 I appear to need to change something in IE temp files! Has anyone else had this? Thanks
cpjitservices Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Have the users got correct permissions on the area were they are trying to save ?
sted Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 i found if the users user area was say \\server\users$\group\user they needed to be able to read at each level so even if they had no drive mapped to \\server\users$ your group or authenticated users needed read permissions for that folder and the group folder as well as their own or word crashed when saving for me
reggiep Posted May 19, 2014 Author Posted May 19, 2014 Permissions all correct on folders. It has to be our profile as that's the only thing I changed! - - - Updated - - - I have now gone over the profile by creating a new one. This seems to work for my test student but is taking 100 seconds to load! The ntuser.man is only 1 .1 Mb so I'm doubly stumped now!
Asgard Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 Reggie how big is the rest of the profile? And have you binned off the stubfiles from the registry. Our complete student profile is about 5mb if you want I can send you some notes I have on our mandatory profile - takes about 10 seconds to login - about 6 on a new Core i5 Or pop in for a coffee and have a nose at ours ;-) John Paul Birkenhead Sixth Form
mrbios Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 What are you guys putting in your profiles? Mines only 816kb total on the folder, you got some programs that need information in there?
Asgard Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 (edited) Yeah, Adobe CS suite kicks off if there isn't bits in it, then we have some other bits of software but the main culprit is Matchware Mediator - that takes up 2mb Visual Studio also took a few mb until we figured out if you create a couple of registry keys it doesn't do the 'starting for the first time' delay Edited June 28, 2014 by Asgard

I've got CS5 Web premium on all our machines here (photosop/dreamweaver/fireworks/flash) but no information for it is held in the profile and it's been perfectly happy for years.
Asgard Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 (edited) Same version as you, probably has about 80k in size Off the top of my head other apps are Solidworks Autodesk Entertainment Creation Visual Studio Delphi 2010 Just checked firefox uses 1.8mb on it's own. Edited June 28, 2014 by Asgard
speckytecky Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Had this problem, no one was able to resolve it for me until Kevin Carter of Capita spotted that the C:\Windows\Temp folder permissions were not propagating correctly. Have to set them so the User has control over the folder or else Office can't set it's Temp file up in there. Huge thank you to Capita's super star Kevin - I don't think he lurks here but the man is an absolute gem.
