Home Laptop Sync with Domain

Hello

 

This may be a really far fetched idea but the following has been proposed and I think I've seen something similar implemented but wasn't in on the configuration.

 

Our teachers are issued with laptops for home use and as such are not on the domain but it has been asked if it is possible for whatever they save on these laptops to be accessible on the school domain PC's.

 

I assume this will have something to do with the user profile and\or joining the laptops to the domain?

 

If any body does know how this is possible and what to do then I will gladly listen to any advice. Thank you in advance.

Why not just get some remote access to the network going? Look at Home Access Plus (search on edugeek for this). This would be by the simplest way for staff to save things so they are available on the network.

If they're domain machines, DirectAccess is also worth a look, but it's more of a faff to set up than HAP+

OwnCloud, Tell them it's like dropbox. what ever they want to sync the drop into the owncloud directory on there area then it will sync and be accessible from the web client or desktop client at home.

RemoteDesktop (Staff get a desktop that would be the same as in school, they can access all shared drives and even print to the printers in the school)

We use Citrix to provide access to the network on staff personal devices. They connect to the BYOD wireless network and get presented with the login screen. There they get a session delivered.

Interesting mention of HAP as it would appear this school (I haven't worked here long) already has this available on the website.

 

Is it perhaps the case that it is not being used correctly on the laptops? Is there client software for HAP or do users just need a link to that page on the website from the desktop?

 

I know which server it is being hosted on but can see no mention of it being installed or which version it might be?

Its web based for the clients. Maybe they didn't get as far as rolling it out so may not be installed completely.

Yes thank you I understand that it is web based but does it seem right that the user has to first go to the school website in order to access it? I thought perhaps it worked like Dropbox for example where something actually gets installed on the laptops?

 

Perhaps it's just easier to put a link on the laptops straight to the HAP page on our website?

 

Apologies if my understanding seems simplistic.

Could you setup the laptops to be connected to the Domain, then enable offline folders - so the teacher uses the laptop as a network machine throughout the day, with their home directory synced onto the HDD. Teacher goes home, does what they need to do. Next day when back in school the machine syncs all the files back to the domain.
