Change file permission of pupil during a test

Hello,

 

We want to write a program that sets the pupil permissions to only write so they can't look or use any exercises they did before. Are there any coders that already have something like this?

Is there any reason why you can't create a test specific account for such a reason? I've used accounts (exam1/2/3 etc ) which have been used specifically for exam users which have been locked down so they can't access old work, internet etc.

We also use unique accounts for exams, and even for controlled assessments students are provided with a unique logon with resource materials they have created beforehand copied over for the start of the assessment.

 

Been working nicely for the last 10 years or so for us and a minimal admin overhead to create the accounts once or twice a year.

The problem is that sometimes the pupils have to do a test at like the last minutes of the period. So by the time they logged off and logged on there's no time anymore. I suggested the idea to the main ICT-coördinator but unfortunatly he doesn't want that. Otherwise it would be a great idea.

What you need is a piece of classroom control software that lets you put the users in to exam mode restricting them from running anything other than what the teacher wants and then you send them the test as a word file or whatever they complete it and the teacher collects it in and then switches them back to normal mode.

@plexer has a good idea with the control software, restrict all other applications other than a specific set is fairly common in most products.

 

Otherwise creating a script to deny access to files, then reset the permissions would likely need to be run under an admin level user account and I'm not sure how prudent that would be to delegate to staff.

How about setting up an environment they RDP on to to take the test? Special permissions on the work folder so they can write only. They can't open, delete or modify any saved work, even their own.

You could set a distinct colour scheme so its easy to see if they dropped back to the desk top.
