I've had a teacher ask for Vimeo to be unblocked and thought I'd poke the EduGeek hive-mind about it.

 

 

Last time I looked at Vimeo it wasn't the sort of video hosting site I'd be comfortable unblocking in a school, lots of adult content.

 

The reason it's being requested is because a website with maths related videos uses Vimeo instead of youtube now, so none of their videos will play.

 

 

What are everyone's thoughts? Am I being overly cautious or am I right to be wary of Vimeo?

We've had similar requests and have denied them on the basis that there's plenty of nudity available - even under some innocent search terms.

 

We also make all requests got through our helpdesk with the reason why they want it unblocked listed so there's some accountability if there's anything that slipped past our normally vigilant eyes.

We have blocked it for students but have left it accessible for staff.

 

We had an incident a few months back where one of our students was viewing some STRONG content on Vimeo.

We've got youtube completely unblocked [regular not the edu version] and this is what they're using to counter "vimeo is full of porn".

 

I'm going to have a word with our CP lead and try to get a policy change their end to force youtube for schools...

We've had similar problems because the National Literacy Trust uses Vimeo for their videos too.

 

It's unblocked at adult level but not at child level. Youtube is the same. I wouldn't be comfortable with either site being unblocked at child level.
