kxv2020 Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I am looking for some ideally free software that will do web filtering on Windows - and that runs on windows server?
FN-GM Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Its not free but surf control will do the job, sorry I don't know of any free software for this job.
FN-GM Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I have used a trial and it does the job but needs to be on a moderately powerful machine to be used effectively. i tried it on a server that’s wasn't to good 1GHz 512mb ram and sometimes you could access the sites until you refreshed the page then it will block. I personally recommend Websence I have used this in a school environment and is very effective. If you would like free open source Linux software you could give Squid a go.
apeo Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Er.. FN im sure you meant Dansguardian with Squid. You should give Dansguardian a go if you are willing to play with linux...
mrcrazy04 Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 If you don't mind running a Linux box, Squid and Dansguardian (open source and developed by one of the guys at Smoothwall) are very effective once you set it up right. I've run it, and apart from the odd false positive Dansguardian is excellent. It's also relatively simple to install if you choose Ubuntu or another distribution and have the GUI with it. I believe Smoothwall express also has Dansguardian on it, and might be slightly easier to configure, however I haven't used Smoothwall express yet. Edit: Apeo beat me to it!
FN-GM Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Er.. FN im sure you meant Dansguardian with Squid. You should give Dansguardian a go if you are willing to play with linux... I did mean that, thats what you get from doing a few jobs at once.
apeo Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 yeah same here is just told someone the wrong version number in another thread
FN-GM Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I always cockup doing two things at once but we still do it. Why????
ZeroHour Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Smart Filter Bess is what we use but its not free but it really is v good for isa server.
john Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Censornet - the open source version rather than the new paid for one.
