Server 2012 R2 print server

I had a physical print server in the shape of Server 2008 (x86). This always seemed to work just fine.

Then I moved printing to Server 2012 R2 VM (x64) - grief!

 

I have a handful of HP printers and a couple of RISO Comcolour. The HPs seem to be OK but the RISO are constantly having issues where clients (x86) send a print job thru and it shows up "Deleting - printed"

But it hasn't printed and never shows up on the printer's list of print jobs.

 

If i change the printer properties on the server to 'Print directly to printer' instead of 'Spool docs so program finishes faster' it seems to work OK for a while, then plays up again later in the day. But this also slows down printing.

All printer drivers are latest from manufac.

 

Anyone else experiencing such printing issues?

Im not sure if its a server 2012 R2 problem, the fact that its x64 server .. etc.

 

At this point I'm thinking of going back to Server 2008 for printing.

i have found printer drivers for X86 clients on a 64 bit host to be very fussy to the point of having to use universal drivers on the server (as its essentially just spooling the job, and holding some default settings).

 

the driver version for X86 and X64 need to match is what alot of the MS technet stuff says for best results

I found type 4 drivers to be unreliable so I reinstalled everything carefully with type 3 drivers for x64 and x86 , this is a mix of HP, konica, samsung and utax - the server upto now is working fine (in a vm)

We're using x64 print server and installed both 64 and 86 drivers for HP, Samsung, sharp MFPs. No issues even with a middle man running in the form of print manager plus.

Exactly the same setup here and working perfectly. Must say I am very impressed with how 2012R2 is working as a print server.
