hyperv imageed from vmware blue screen

Hi

 

I am trying to move a virtual server, MS Server 2003, running under VMware.

 

I originally tried to dd the image using clonezilla to get it working with hyperv but started getting blue screen.

 

I thought it might be better to use WDS, but am having the same blue screen after deploying the image in hyperv

 

I wondered if anyone knew the best way to go with moving this VMware image to hyperv

Have you tried to use something like disk2vhd instead or System centre virtual machine manager to convert it in order to strip any platform specific drivers from it.

 

Server 2003 is ancient and hyper-V only supports SP2 and above as at 2k8, maybe not even that anymore.

 

Look to use a conversion tool and eve better look to upgrade it to something that does not run on steam if a all possible.

I have tried various conversion tools. Cannot remember which off top of my head, I will look again tomorrow.

 

I don't think disk2vhd was one of them though.

Uninstall VMWare tools... if it's installed.

 

Vmdk2Vhd is a simple utility to convert virtual hard drive images from VMWare's VMDK format into the Microsoft's VHD format. This is a sector by sector copy operation from one format to the other and the source file remains unaltered.

I did this and actually the 2003 server I moved from vmware to hyper-v was my wds server.

 

I used ntbackup to do a full backup of the machine and then created a new one in Hyper-v and then restored the backup over the top, worked like a charm.

If the VM is BSOD on bootup, try F8 and disable automatic restart on boot and see what error you are getting.

 

As Synack has pointed out, make sure you are running SP2 prior to migration

 

I've seen BSOD issues on VM's with DC roles where AD files can't be detected due to disk conflicts, if it's a DC and it's BSOD, try DSRM and see if that gets you in.

I know I had issues with Vmdk2Vhd. I will have another look and let you know what the problem was

Did you backup to local drive and move the backup file, then create a new server and restore?

I did try f8 I get same blue screen its just says run chkdsk

I wondered how you dealt with automated system recovery floppy disks as VMware and hyperv use different floppy formats?

This was ages but I don't recall using that to be honest all the asr stuff is also on the full backup.
