Hi

I have a Dell Poweredge 830 with 2 SATA 120GB HDD's, it has no hardware raid..

How do I mirror the drive with software ?

Is it in the BIOS Boot or in Windows ?

Not sure exactly, but without any sort of hardware raid (integrated or PCI card) you'd have no option but to do it in Windows - becuase presumably you wouldn't have a seperate RAID BIOS.

Apologies if I'm totally wrong, but that's from my limited understanding of RAID.

Yeah, you'd do it in the Disk Management console, but beware the performance overhead: you're transferring RAID workload that should be handled by a RAID controller to the CPU.

Would agree with that. Software RAID should be avoided if possible.

Are you sure it has no RAID controller? The documentation suggests it has a CERC SATA 6 channel RAID card

If it doesn't, I would suggest buying one, as stated above hardware RAID is the preferred choice!

So would you advise me to purchase a SATA Raid Card?

Is the stress on the CPU that bad with software RAID ?

Yes, and yes!
