Compaq Presario CQ56 Notebook PC turns on but it won't show anything on the screen

My Neighbors laptop Hard drive Failed. Bought a new HDD and installed Win 7.

 

later When I turn it on the screen is blank, and it seems like it doesn't log into Windows (because when it goes into Windows it usually makes the welcome noise) the Capslock light flashes continuously ( flash then pause for 3 sec and flash again), the CD drive works, the wireless light is red, on the left side in one of the USB ports it has a small light that flickers a bit and then stops after I turn on the computer. The laptop battery works, the AC adapter works (the light where the adapter connects to turns on when I connect it), I tried take out the battery and disconnect the adapter and turn on the So everything works except the screen is blank, I connected another external Monitor but no display as well.

 

As suggested in some forum Strip apart and cleaned the fan as well, changed the ram and RAM slots, Still nothing works. Same Caps lock flashes continually and Wireless light is red / orange.

 

Any suggestions?

Failed bios or hopefully keyboard firmware update. Try pulling the onboard keyboard connector out and boot then. Could just be locking up trying to update the keyboard firmware.

You mean Remove the Keyboard and Boot?

Yes, disconnecting it and booting. If so you may be able to reflash the keyboard manually but would probably just want a new one.

I did try this, still problem exist. no improvement at all.

You managed to install W7 so you must have been able to see something on the screen at that point. Can you get into safe mode ok? If so, graphic drivers must be your problem.

Didn't read as well as I should have, if you can still get bios and stuff up on the screen then it is software. If so I'd suspect intel GPU drivers from Windows update. Can't trust intel drivers as far as you can throw them. If so it may need another reinstall and careful ignoring of intel gpu driver updates.

On HP laptops the flashing CAPS LOCK is usually a sign of a fairly poorly unit. I'd suggest the likelihood of a BIOS/MB failure is there. I have been using an old HP 6735s for months as a Netflix box on my TV and it's been running hot and a couple of days ago finally gave up the ghost with the same symptoms detailed (flashing CAPS LOCK and drives spinning up). I've had to give up on mine as a lost cause. I know on some of the older DV6000/DV9000 models with the NVidia 8600M graphics this was one possible symptom of GPU failure if the chip had failed completely.

Out of curiosity, how many flashes do you get before a pause? HP Laptops usually flash an error code using these lights if there is a fault.

Yes I did install windows 7. Now I could not even get to BIOS .

Hi Dave,

I read something about the caps lock blink. Its just continues flash. There is No pattern. I thing 1 blink and pause. I try to reset the BIOS battery by stripping the laptop still no joy.
