Remote Desktop Connection Problem

Hi,

 

I am trying to do a remote desktop connection to my server is SUSE Linus and having a few problems.

 

I type in rdp:/server1 on the remote desktop connection console and i get the attached error message.

 

Originally i thought it might be the firewall so i disabled it did a reboot and i still have the problem. I have had it working fine on another machine but this one doesn't want to work.

 

Any ideas?

No i don't think so, it worked fine on the other machine. The IP address is from the DHCP server.

Can you ping the server name?

 

So the remote machine is a windows box? ...and the PC you're connecting from running SUSE I presume.

 

The other machine working fine - I presume you're talking about another windows box you can connect successfully to ??

@Mark The server concerned is a Windows 2003 Server, I can ping it & i am accessing shared folders on it with the SUSE machine. I had it working fine on a different machine running SUSE. I have changed my base unit, now i can't get it to work on the new installation. I can connect to the server via remote desktop connection in Windows XP fine.

can you telnet to the server on port 3389 from suse

 telnet server1 3389

if it connects it will prove there are no firewall/network issues in the way

Go to the shell and type it in.

oh right tried that and i get

 

telnet: server1: Name or service not known

server: Unknown host

 

I thought i was doing something wrong

looks like DNS ('unknown host' kind of suggests that).

 

have you tried the FQDN or the IP address instead of the host name?

Do you mean in the remote desktop connection, i am just about to try that put it needs a port what port will it be?

As has been previously said by CyberNerd (scroll up dude) ... port 3389.

 

It does sound a lot like a DNS issue. Trying with the IP address of the server would be of help to see whether it /is/ a dns issue.

 

If trying with the IP address works have a look to see whether the DNS servers are the same on the box that it works from and the box that it doesnt.

 

Also check to see whether the box it works from is getting it's settings via DHCP and the box it doesnt isnt. It could be that it's not picking up the right DNS settings from the DHCP server. (possibly....)

OK the IP address works, i checked the DNS IP addresses on the new SUSE box and they are correct. The old SUSE box has long gone now
