For me I would like to stop anyone messing about with the settings. I've just put a password on Air Play so they cant access that - but what's stopping them changing the wireless settings for example?

 

Do you have Apple TV in your school, if so how have you locked them down?

You can actually Apple Configurate these little bundles of joy. Plug em into a Mac with Apple Configurator running

OOH - that's interesting! I'll have a look at that now.

So you dont actually need the remote control for them to work then? What happens when they go to sleep or power off? Are they just in some kind of standby mode that they can wake up from if someone wants to connect to them via AirPlay?

I've tried 3 Apple TV's on the Apple Configurator program each time it gets right to the last stage and then fails saying unknown error so I give up with that bit and I'll have to set them up manually.

 

I've managed to find some security brackets that you screw to the ceiling/wall etc. and then you can physically secure the Apple TV so the little rascals can't walk off with them

 

 

With regards to Remote Controls - I dont know what to do with these as they're too small to secure to anything and too expensive to hand out to all the staff with iPads. Would love to know how other Secondary Schools are using Apple TVs.

Not quite sure how this helps with what to do with the remote controls or how to secure the Apple TVs though. On second thoughts, I may just have found a place to put the remotes...

There's a few things here..

 

1, The cost of the devices

2, Theft

3, Remotes going missing

 

I'm assuming your PC's/projectors are secure, thats great. Why bother add more hardware when there is a software package available that will do everything that an apple tv is required for in a classroom. Not to mention, per apple TV you could actually have almost 12 licenses for.

 

Providing your wireless is on the same network as your curriculum, bonjour is enabled with device discovery you can replicate the iPad straight to the pc at a fraction of the cost.

 

Lets face it, the only reason apple TVs are showing up in schools are not because you can watch Netflix or youtube on them. It's for the mirroring.

 

Netflix/youtube already works perfect on the PC/projectors. What's the point in adding another layer of hardware for a simpleton geography teacher to get confused by. The insane costing of the devices and the concerns around security.

 

Build around what you've already got as a rock solid and stable environment.

 

Software that provides mirroring at a fraction of the cost with no stupid tickets logged because the staff dont understand they have to pick "input 1" for the PC and "input 2" for the apple TV. Along with no remotes to get lost.

Having unsuccessfully tried using Apple TV in school I'm left wondering why anyone bothers with it when Air Server is available on a site licence for a fraction of the cost of one complete Apple TV set up?

Other advantage of airserver is you can run it when you need it, so you don't have loads of rooms showing when you go to mirror. (And the traffic saving)

Am interested to know what you would suggest to use in a room that does not have access to a laptop/pc to install air server on? We are using the Apple TV in a Gym where the teacher does not have access to any other device bar an IPAD. They are fixed to the wall with a bracket and we use Apple Configurator to install any settings before locating them in the final position.

They purchased the Apple TVs and iPads before I joined the School/Academy nearly two years ago so any suggestions on what 'upcycling' options I have with regards to the Apple TVs we have? I was thinking of taking a large nail and hammering one to the floor and then have an Apple Door Stop - any other suggestions on what to do with them??
