Explorer search results - group by option missing

A strange issue noticed by one user, it effects everyone but only one is bothered by it!

 

In windows explorer, if you click on 'view' there is a menu item called 'group by' (see image 1)

 

If you run a search, the 'group by' menu item disappears (see image 2). It is also not available when right clicking in the background of explorer.

 

Any ideas how to get it back? The person in question is complaining about the grouped search results
