hallb15 Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Hi hallb15, we do have a special arrangement set up with ESET if you do want to go down that path rather than Sophos. You deal with them and their distribution directly rather than purchasing through us, and we don't take even a penny margin for it. If you want the contact details just give the office or your account manager a call. Ignore the above hallb15, saw the later post you made about getting Sophos. Sorry. Was not meant to be a sales pitch (as we don't sell it), but to let you know of another option we have set up. It is there for you and all our customers should you need it in the future. No problem - nice to see Exa has a presence on EduGeek! So, on friday I finally disconnected the last machine from LLN. I got the ICT Co-ordinator to video it - is that wrong?
hallb15 Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 verry much this ive done all the ones people asked for maybe i should do a mass email reminding them come midnight its gone I read that they were switching the mail server off at 17:30 today, not midnight! I saved PST files for senior leadership and anyone who asked me to. Hopefully other staff will have listened to my warnings, read my emails, and broadcast messages warning them about the imminent switch off of LLN. If that didn't do it, hopefully the intranet home page will - see below:

IrritableTech Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I read that they were switching the mail server off at 17:30 today, not midnight! 7pm. OWA is still accessible at the moment.
Marshall_IT Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 This might be the biggest April's fool ever! We'll all come in tomorrow and LLN will be installed and running again! 1
SchoolsBroadband Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 £5 says LLN will still work tomorrow and nobody will be cut off 1
IrritableTech Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 £5 says LLN will still work tomorrow and nobody will be cut off I said almost the exact same thing to my team last week. However I wasn't confident enough to put my money where my mouth was.
IrritableTech Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 £5 says LLN will still work tomorrow and nobody will be cut off I think you owe us all a fiver Dave - sorry. 3
EXA_Mark Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I think you owe us all a fiver Dave - sorry. I was so close to taking you up on the £5 bet too Dave; given we know they are wanting to shut the current systems down so they can start stripping the asbestos out of the old LLN/Council data centre at Merrion House ASAP to get it refurbished for the councils move to there in July, but given past history of lack of responsiveness I didn't. Mark
Marshall_IT Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Is it wrong that i have this going through my head this morning? 1

hallb15 Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 Yes you should be continuing with AVCO and the address will remain Avco.leedslearning.net:323. The leedslearning.net domain doesn't expire until dec 2014 and it's controlled by the LCC so it makes sense to leave it where it is, and leave one less thing for schools to change. Data Management are the best people to speak to regarding installing and configuring any of the above. Well our AVCO isn't working today and it has the avco.leedslearning.net address in the config. Also, I can't get an nslookup to any leedslearning.net site so I'm waiting for a response from Data Management to see what is the recommended solution. 1

Just tried our AVCO and it has ceased to function And I've only just got the damned thing working too!!!!! Can you post any resolution that you get?
IrritableTech Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) Same here... I knew it was going too well. Looking into it, someone has changed the name servers for the domain LeedsLearning.Net away from the capita DNS servers today. The new host (cw.net) is based in Germany it seems has no records set at the moment. Once it has propagated, I'll guess they'll need to add the avco record. Looks like a bit of bad planning though. themightymrp Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 In the AVCO software you can replace the URL with the IP address that it used to resolve to (PM me or check your firewall rules). It then works, at least for the time being.

It then works, at least for the time being. Yeah I realise this, but I'm hoping data or anyone else at Leeds is onto the DNS. We've got ten schools we'd need to change otherwise - not to mention the other couple of hundred schools around Leeds that won't know how or what to change.
themightymrp Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I agree, this is not a permanent solution. It was just in case anyone was desperate to get something sent/received during the waiting period.
IrritableTech Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 If this goes on for a while folks like @SchoolsBroadband and @exanetworks could help here. No reason why they couldn't create a record on their DNS servers for the avco server. Then most schools wouldn't know there had been a problem! Hopefully the LCC have it on a priority list to get sorted today.
themightymrp Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Hopefully the LCC have it on a priority list to get sorted today. Hahah If it drags for a long period of time I will create a DNS record on our server to do something similar (we are with virgin). I am going to periodically run an NSLOOKUP on the IP address to see when it bounces back with a name. I can't rely on LCC to inform me of when they've fixed it.
IrritableTech Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 So one DNS entry has been configured this morning... LLN service Snazy site. I'll ring the number regarding avco... 2
IrritableTech Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I've asked that Leeds IT Services put a record into the DNS of LeedsLearning.net for AVCO. They're working on it. 1
IrritableTech Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Looks like they've cracked it. Our DNS server is able to resolve avco.leedslearning.net successfully now. Hopefully everyone else's will be able to soon. Just waiting for Data Management to ring me an confirm. 2
