Moodle updates - first timer

Well the time to do the first Moodle update has come along and I was wondering if anyone has any insights into how the process has gone on their own servers?

 

We are running 2.6.1 and the latest version is 2.6.2 (very minor setup up but don't want to mess it up!) running on IIS on Server 2012 R2.

 

Sufficed to say the server its run off has had a complete VM backup ready to go in moments and in all honesty my biggest issue is when to run it as we've seen the students use it up until midnight!

The best time to run it is at the start of each school holidays (unless is a major security update). announce the down time ahead of time and when it will be back up and users will be able to manage without.

While you should be OK going 2.6.1 to 2.6.2 be sure to check your plugins before you upgrade, or if possible clone the moodle box and upgrade the clone first. Also make sure that everything is backup up, including having a dump of the database. The last time I did an upgrade, I discovered that one of the key plugins we use didn't work in the (then) latest version and it wasn't obvious until the upgrade had been done. Luckily I was able to roll back using the backup and db dump.
