ARCServe and SIMS

Hi All,

 

We are looking into a backup solution not just for our network as a whole but also SIMS which was using Attix5 but we would like to move away from the 'Capita Approved' product and use our own solution we would have to use ARCServe or Symantec Backup Exec (but that doesn't run on Server 2012!) as we have a Synology NAS that will only allow either of those 2 products to backup to it. ARCServe came in cheapest and seems very easy but I haven't had any confirmation that it would backup SIMS successfully or not and wondered if anyone on here had been able to with either positive or negative remarks and how you found it?

SIMS is an SQL database, assuming you have the ArcServe SQL Agent that is for that SQL version you should be fine if you set the job up correctly. In terms of the SIMS installation its a Windows Server so a Windows agent would work with that.

Eh, why? You can buy Attix5 from a number of people who aren't Capita. RedStor is one. Prefer RedStor\Attix5 as it covers you from your school burning down, take St Felix Middle in Newmarket for example, they had the backup tapes in a "fireproof" safe, never did find the safe let alone the tapes - lucky the technician took a backup tape home.

 

Personally I wouldn't bother with the SQL add-in from Symantec\ARCServe, just add a dbattach backup to the pre-command, still you then start to question why you have Symantec\ARCServe for what is a robocopy. Still if it was me, I'd just stick with Attix5, backups aren't worth nothing if you can't restore from it so unless you've got multiple sites miles apart, it's not worth the hassle.

Is this something you are doing where you are. The main reason I'm concerned is that supposedly Attix5 had a 'official' SIMS plugin that would back up the users?

Avoid Symantec Backup Exec.

In my opinion it is the most horrible piece of software to try and use to backup SQL databases (or maybe only SIMS databases).

 

Would recommend RBUSS however.

Very user friendly and is very easy to use to backup SIMS and FMS databases.

This is from my personnel experience though.

I don't know how good ARCServe as I have never used it.

SIMS has a stored procedure (sims.db_p_transfer_login) that copies the SIMS SQL logins from the MASTER database and stores them in the SIMS database, it doesn't get executed as often as it should. I believe Attix5 executes it pre-backup.
