Has anyone managed to get the Lego Wedo activity pack (head icon) working on a system where the pupils store their documents on the server rather than the local My Documents folder? The FAQs acknowledge that this is an issue, but offer very little help in solving it (deleting the .ini file didn't work for me). There doesn't seem to be any contact for technical support!

Thanks,

Sue

Take a look into your registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders) and verify that your path is correct.

Hi Sue, did you get this sorted and if so could you let me know how please, I am trying install on an RM CC4 system. I have the same issue here which is driving me nuts and I am not sure how the response below fits in (am only technical for so far!)

thanks Anne

I have it working just fine on CC4.3, did you install via package builder or importing .msi in RMMC? I think I used the package builder...

I have had 1 machine where the head has been greyed out, the only way I could get it to play ball was a machine rebuild!

Hi Tom, thanks for the update, I have tried both ways - via the RMMC import method - the WeDo package will work fine but it won't do the activity pack at all. I have tried using package builder and the package appears to be created fine but errors when it is assigned to a PC. If you have step by step instructions that you followed I could try again. Did you put an .ini file in the software folder to run it silently - as suggested in other posts on here. I have followed the instructions in the CC4 packaging guide about running a test for silent install using the msiexec?i .....software path / qn+ and it installs fine so thought it would work creating the package. any help gratefully received, thanks Anne

I cannot remember exactly how I managed it, sorry. Perhaps you could post a screen shot of the package properties "Contents" tab and I can compare to what I have? I ask as in my install args it mentions licenses and I think the grey head is a license issue!?

@AnneICT

Loking at this thread again has just reminded me how I did it, there is TEC1539717 on RM Support for installing NXT Software. Follow it and insert WeDo every time you see NXT. Let me know how you get on.

Just stumbled upon this thread when looking for answers relating to getting the activity pack working in WeDo has anyone found a workaround yet for the greyed out head icon?

@TomHD I tired looking at the RM support but unfortunately don't have a logon for RM.

Thanks

Hi @TomHD thanks for the PM with the instruction however I still cannot get the activity pack (head icon) working it is grayed out. In the last step on the insturctions it says:

You will need to make another package to add a My Documents folder to the local service user. This would be located in C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\My Documents folder.

This does not really apply to Windows 7 as far as I can tell.

@sjb did you manage to get it working in the end before I cantact support?

Cheers

Sorry for the late response. I eventually got this response from Lego support:

The Activity icon being greyed-out has also been known to be related to Flash Player so did you have any luck with the patch for Windows which can be obtained from the following site:

http://education.lego.com/en-gb/searchresult?q=wedo

Didn't fix our issue, which seems to be related to the pupils having their documents folder redirected from the default location, but may work for someone else. Upgrading to Windows 10 seems to have made ours work, ironically, but wouldn't recommend this solution as it creates a host of other issues!

Hey - I never post on these boards and pretty much just lerk - but this one I found a fix for and can't find it anywhere else on the net, so wanted to share it with you guys and maybe it helps somebody, even though the thread older than most primary school kids.

Seems like this reason for the grey head in my situation is the .ini file is blank or pointing to an incorrect location. (SIMS tech's - how familiar does this sound)

Install WeDo as normal, then navigate to C:\Users\Public Documents\LEGO Creations\Wedo\WeDo.ini

Have a look at the inside of this, grey heads come from an almost empty file. Try pasting this in (for x64 - add the x86 on the Prog):

Custom=0

Project=0

[WeDo]

AllowMultipleInstances=False

[Language]

Lang=ENU

[sounds]

Project=0

Custom=0

Head="C:\Program Files\LEGO Software\LEGO Education WeDo Software\engine\WeDo\activities\index.html"

Literally that bottom line is what fixes it, but like to put the other stuff in there, cuz you know, OCD.

Have also found the file can become corrupt in the future too, to prevent this have restricted permission to read only on standard users. Seems to be happy so far.

Does anyone know why the this ini file keeps going corrupt? I just installed this on a teacher's machine a week ago and already had to go and fix the ini file. We had a whole computer lab I had to update it on as well. It worked last year, but when they tried to use it this year the little Activity head was not yellow. I am just trying to figure out how we can make it so it works for the teachers all the time. TIA

Not sure why it keeps changing, think it must be a part of the software to take out the line where the activities are installed if it (wrongly) detects the activity pack not to be there.

The manual says the 'yellow head will be grey if the activities arnt installed' so guessing some kind of polling must take place to see if they are installed, then the ini is modified? (incorrectly of course) so it may be a bug.

Have you tried modifying the ini so it's correct, then denying access on write and modify to everyone?

Not exactly a fix for the underlying cause, but seems to stop my ini from being "mutilated".
