2nd internet connections

Hi I'm wondering how many schools actually have a second independent internet connection for disaster recovery reasons?

We have 2 leased lines in our office run by separate companies for such an event.

When I worked in a school we had dual lines run by M247. Each was provided by a different company (Virgin and TalkTalk) and using different technologies (Fibre and EFM). Each was also brought into the building via a different route. Our single point of failure would have been the router, although we could have chosen to dual-home the router but decided the additional cost wasn't worth it

My first school have one. It bypassed the LEA so it was useful for getting to sites they banned. It was also used by our library system as the LEA banned Z39.50 protocol; they didn't know what it was so they banned it. We also used it as a way into the network so uses could access their files from home; again the LEA refused to allow this.

We have three separate links to our ISP (two load-sharing and one as a backup) and an additional ADSL (BT Business Internet) backup solution (which we're looking to upgrade to BT's Infinity service). All failovers between links are automated via EAPS and our Watchguard firewall's multi-WAN capability.

I believe all SWGfL schools can have a ADSL backup line for free. With a second router as well it will automatically failover if the router or line fails.

I have some schools with 4 lines; sometimes all from the same ISP, just to get more bandwidth - sometimes for redundancy. I often use Peplink devices to combine the throughput or handle failover.

At the school I was as we had an ADSL line we could access should a failure of the primary from the LA fail.
