We are soon to be getting some iPads and I have heard they can be managed with Apple configurator(?)... There is an unused MacBook Pro in school and I wondered if I could use this to manage the iPads? ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I'd pop some more memory in there. But that should be easy enough as any PC2-6400S 2GB SODIMM will work. You could upgrade to Mavericks if you fancied, since it's free. But otherwise it should have enough about it to install and run configurator.
Norphy Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 To get Apple Configurator, you need access to the Mac App Store which requires Snow Leopard (10.6.8) at the very least. The current version of Configurator also won't run on anything below OS X 10.8. A Macbook2,2 is from 2006, it is a pre-unibody Mac if my GoogleFu serves me correctly. At best, you'll be able to get 10.7 on there. I suspect that if you want to use Apple Configurator, you'll have to get something a bit newer.

ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Suggesting Mavericks was my bad. I thought you have a mid 2007 machine! Mavericks is 10.9, but you need to have the correct firmware to be able to install it and your macbook is a little too old. I had the same problem with a Mac Pro today. You'd think 2 x Quad core Xeons and 32GB RAM would run it fine, but nope, not allowed to complete the install.
Norphy Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Your Macbook is from 2006. The newest operating system it can run is Lion or OS X 10.7. Configurator needs Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) or Mavericks (OS X 10.9). Unless you can somehow get hold of an old version of Configurator, you're not going to be able do what you want to do. And even then, chances are that old versions of Configurator won't work with newer iOS devices.

Yes. Or that the 10.6.8 won't run because the hardware will not be powerful enough? It's because it's an early Intel chip which will not run the latest OS. Is Mavericks an official OS then? Yes. Even with Lion and extra RAM which will likely be hard to find or expensive, the last poster is right that an early version of configurator won't work. Find another device.
