dgsmith Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 Very interesting. Did you buy it direct from Dell or through a vendor? Reseller.. we seldom deal direct with manufacturers for anything unless it's the only or advised option for the query/issue being handled. One thing we didn't do was look at getting a 10GbE card for the rear which was a bit of an oversight. Wondering if anyone else has done this successfully and which card they use? There is still a lot about the VRTX we haven't touched though and wouldn't know how to deal with.. something we need to look at more closely at some point. The ability to manage and monitor the chassis independently of the VRTX contents is a bonus though.
pow Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 IMO you should only buy Dell equipment from Dell. They deal with Education directly, and very well. 1
PotNoodleTech Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Tall Pall. PM me your email address and name - I have a dell edu account manager based in the South West interested in speaking to you about your VRTX etc. Thanks.
dgsmith Posted June 1, 2015 Author Posted June 1, 2015 Anyone that has a VRTX.. did you spec 10GbE when new, or perhaps had it added in via an add-in card? We are contemplating whether it's worth doing however are unsure whether we could use a generic 10GbE expansion card or if the hardware might be "picky" as to what is used! Currently we have 2 1gig links from the VRTX to the core.. we thought these should have been trunked but it appears not to be the case.. at least not at the core switch end.
john Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Dell are better Dell resellers by the way.. Certainly not in commercial they are not our Dell account manager was very complaisant she would never be beaten till she called me and asked why I hadn't placed an order in nearly a year to me telling her that every reseller I tried beat her by several hundred pounds a unit on the Ultrabooks we use, she then couldn't beat the price for ages and then finally she got some higher level approval to beat it which then made it unbeatable by resellers. Certainly don't write off the power of the reseller.
pow Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 Seems you can now get a 10GBe switch for the VRTX: PowerEdge VRTX 10Gb Switch Module, Int 16 ports to Ext 6 ports (4x 10Gb SFP+, 2x 1Gb RJ45)
